So you have scheduled a session and now comes the task of picking out the outfits for you or you and your family. I understand this can be a daunting task if you have multiple family members to dress. Here are some tips and tricks and my editing style chart to help during this time.
I. Don'ts of Clothing in Session
Don't wear logos | wording - Don't let these define you or distract from your personality. Unless it is for a Branding session that involves that business directly.
Don't Dress too Casual | or trying a new style - This session is a special occasion. Try to wear business casual or Sunday best. Also, don't try a new style at this time. Stay within the style that you are comfortable wearing. This will help bring out your personality much better.
Forego Planning - Don't wing it. I am the type of person that plans out stuff in advance so when it comes to that day, I am not in a panic over if something is going to match or not.
II. Here are the Do's
K.I.S.S. - Keep It Simple Silly! I live by these words. When you start to complicate things, those things can get out of hand quickly. Just keep it simple. Stick to solid colors then add simple patterns.
Flatter your Shape (no matter your size | shape) - Wear something that fits and shows your figure well. Make your shirts are ironed
Natural Feeling - Your clothing, makeup, hair should be as natural as possible. Let your hair frame your face (if possible, I have short hair) and try to avoid a ponytail.
Coordinate - Plan ahead, look at all the outfits together as one before the session especially if it is a group session. Bring hairbrushes, eyeglass cleaner, etc. for quick and easy touchups.
Be Yourself - This is the most important thing that you can do during a session.
Here is an example:
This is an example of using patterns and solid colors to coordinate for a session. My dress is one of my favorites to wear and also helped that my faux hawk at the time was dyed purple. Within the pattern of the pink florals, there are spots of blue & greens. I used the blue for my husband because he looks great in blues and greens according to his skin tone. Skin tone is something you can plan for also. For example, my skin looks great in maroons, dark reds, deep greens, any shade of those colors and autumn tones. Pastels are not friendly. My husband on the other hand has a underline red tint to skin and looks better with blues, greens, and greys. Blue | Greens are best because it helps bring out his eyes. Our daughter is pale skin and blonde, so everything looks great on her except yellow. She also loves unicorns. With all that being said, I wore the 1 pattern and matched by my family to me. Even though blue looks amazing on my daughter, I didn't want too much blue beside each other in the images so I spread out the colors.
III. Matching your Environment or Theme of the session
Another thing that I considered was location. The photographer had mentioned where we were taking images. You don't want to blend into the scene, but you also don't want to stand so far out that it distracts. You want to compliment your surroundings. My home's style is Boho- Chic | Modern farmhouse, which means that that color scheme is light and airy and perceive the feeling of openness.
If you want alittle more modern or industrial look, Urban landscapes are the best way to accomplish this vibe. With the architecture of a cityscape can add textures and a modern feel to your images. If you want to standout in the city then light not bright colors would look good, but if you are looking to bring more of your personality out then darker colors would do. i.e. image below
